TYPES OF EDITING
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Developmental editing is the most intensive form of editing. A developmental editor may suggest major revisions, help develop the story, and improve the overall structure of the manuscript. During this period the manuscript may undergo several rewrites, the editor may suggest moving or deleting large sections of text, and any plot or character inconsistencies will be addressed. Any issues with syntax will also be corrected.
LINE EDITING
This is a stage in the editing process which highlights issues with tone, style and inaccuracy. The manuscript is studied on a line by line basis, ensuring each sentence is structured correctly, is grammatically error-free, and makes sense to a reader. The general flow of the document is analysed and certain issues, like historical inaccuracies or plagiarisms, may be highlighted.
COPY EDITING
This kind of edit corrects problems with grammar, style, repetition, spelling and incorrect word usage. It also may highlight some obvious inaccuracies or issues with clichés and colloquialisms. Copy editing is usually the final stage in the editing process and is rarely recommended as a service on its own unless the manuscript is already in a very good condition.
PROOFREADING
This is the finishing touch to your document and it is normally performed after all other edits have been completed. Proofreading picks up on small mistakes like spelling errors and punctuation issues but will not check for inconsistencies or errors in the plot.
